Saturday mornings always call for an out-of-routine breakfast. It just feels wrong and almost offensive to start your weekend with an ordinary meal, after all you have just made it through the whole working/student (whatever you do I’m sure it’s still tiring!) week, so why not reward yourself right? Well once again we had reached that wonderful time of the week, which meant exactly that.
“I’ve got to take you to Kepos St. Kitchen!” I squealed to Julius as I sat in the passenger seat of the car. He let out a little chuckle and shot back a disbelieving look as if to say Really? YOU’RE taking me? I was very familiar with this look as it was one he had long adopted since he’d learnt about my (lets just say) distaste for driving. Luckily I’ve mastered the oblivious, doe-eyed attitude and replied with a confident “you’re gonna love it!” with a huge grin that would be impossible to turn down.

I had recently visited Kepos Street Kitchen with a couple of girlfriends a few weeks prior. One of them lives in Redfern and since KSK had been on my endless list of places to eat for as long as I could remember, I quickly took advantage of the ‘lets keep it local’ factor to lure them in. Not that this contemporary, little Middle Eastern inspired café needed any convincing, they happily obliged. From the minute we sat down to the moment we swallowed our last flavoursome bite, I just knew I needed to take Julius there ;)
Kepos Street Kitchen is a small simplistic cafe located on the corner of Kepos St. and Phillip St. I do warn you to expect a cue upon arrival as it fills up rapidly, however I must admit that I was very impressed at how quickly we were able to get a table (in my case for both occasions) waiting no more than 10 minutes. I’m not quite sure if this is the case all the time or if I just got lucky twice but hey, I’m not complaining!
Upon walking in, it’s clear that head chef and owner Michael Rantissi had used his space wisely, keeping the interior crisp and simple which compliments its intimate atmosphere. Large clear windows surround the café, naturally brightening up the place and creating a pleasant & relaxed feel. The breakfast menu reflects Mr. Rantissi’s upbringing in Tel Aviv through a selection of Middle Eastern dishes with a modern twist to it.

Egg & Bacon brioche roll, KSK chili jam, roasted tomatoes & spinach $14
Julius ordered the Egg & bacon brioche roll, which is a slightly fancier version of your average bacon and egg roll but just as messy nonetheless. It comes with Juicy lashings of bacon, two perfectly fried eggs with soft runny centers, KSK chili jam and roasted tomatoes & spinach sandwiched between two lightly toasted sweet brioche buns. The ksk chili jam was very mild, giving it that slight kick to the taste buds. The addition of roasted tomatoes and spinach made the dish feel somewhat ‘healthier’ which is always a bonus. This dish won extra points as it had some serious #yolkporn business going on, perfect for all you ‘yolk lovers’ out there!
Couscous trifle, cinnamon, berry compote, Turkish delight yogurt $15
My overactive sweet tooth demanded that I order the only sweet based item on the menu, this dish was an interestingly brilliant concoction of Middle Eastern ingredients and flavours. It was wonderfully presented in a glass jar, which I felt acted almost like a window, showcasing each multicoloured layer. The cinnamon spice bursts out with every spoonful of soft couscous, creating an earthy dynamic to it. However the mild rose-tone flavours in the generous dollop of Turkish delight yogurt is what brings each flavour to life, perfectly counteracting the sweetness from the berry compote. They say sharing is caring but after having this dish, I believe that there's a fine line and this had definitely crossed that!
